Gale (b.1930) served in the Air Force in Korea from 1951 to 1952, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1955. After graduating from the Dunwoody Institute (Minneapolis) in 1958 with a degree in refrigeration, he bought Lackore Electric Motor Repair in La Crosse (Wisconsin).
